As part of the master planning strategy for this new city of 150,000 on the Red Sea, several residential typologies were developed. These were designed to establish guidelines for the various developers of the different sites and, at the same time, provide model housing designs for the employees of the client. We designed 10 home types with the focus being on medium-density townhouses and villas.

Ross Logie, leading the project for AECOM, drew his inspiration from the vernacular architecture of the region. Buildings are designed around intimate courtyards and gardens. This responds to the cultural values of privacy and separation yet also has climatic advantages – natural cross ventilation and daylight generate the layouts. Planning is based on orthogonal geometries, integrating planar walls and overhanging roofs with screens and glazing. Again, the various screening devices are inspired by the decorative screens of the region but treated with contemporary rigour to control daylight and views.
