Halala Kanda

A villa transformed in Sri Lanka

This substantial project comprises the renovation and extension of an existing, British colonial house set in one hectare of land in Weligama, Sri Lanka.

The building, dating from 1911, has been sensitively restored. In addition, we planned new pavilions to house dining, kitchen and library. These additions respect the existing form and style yet are clearly defined as contemporary interventions.

The project encourages outdoor living in a tropical climate with extensive use of verandahs, open-sided pavilions and courtyards. A new swimming pool overlooks tea plantations. High ceilings, fans and cross ventilation mitigate the need for air conditioning.

The villa now operates as an exclusive resort available for vacation rentals.
